Versatile and good quality
I have been searching for a fine tapered diamond sharpener for a while, in order to dress some serrated knives and fine woodworking tools. It takes only a couple strokes to restore an edge. The grit is incredibly aggressive and consistent. I wish a companion tool was offered with a finer grit, but I am able to polish with other methods. Overall, I am incredibly pleased. I like how there are a couple contours to work with, so I don’t have to buy four other sharpeners when I want a quick touch up.

Versatile sharpener, but not without itâs flaws.
Positives:This is a fantastic and very versatile little sharpener that will last a very long time! Itâs very well thought out by the fact that it offers pretty much every type of sharpening surface that one could need. It features a tapered rod for sharpening serrations and things like chainsaw blades, or anything in very tight areas. It has a half-round rod that is great for general purpose sharpening that may require either a standard round rod, or a flat stone as well. Finally, it also sports a fish hook sharpening groove. All of these features combine to make a very handy all-in-one package! All that being said, the best part of it all is that they some how many to sell these for less than $10! Most of the time I see them selling here on Amazon (as of Jan, 19â) for just under $8. Thatâs just awesome.Negatives:There are two really big negative that became really apparent to me after carrying and using this sharpener for a few months. First, I noticed that you have to be a bit careful when sliding the rod back into the handle when putting the sharpener away because there is a tendency to push a little too hard and cause the rod to push the little black plastic end-cap off of the pen body… I found this to be a little annoying but certainly not a deal breaker by any means! You just need to be aware of it, and be sure not to slide the rod back into the pen house too aggressively.Unfortunately, the deal breaker for me was the fact that when the sharpener is not in use, there is about a .25â length of the half-round end of the rod that is left completely exposed and sticking out of the sharpener. At first this didnât seem like it would be a big deal; WRONG! After carrying this sharpener in the front pocket of my jeans for a month, that little exposed portion of the diamond rod actually abraded a hole in my pocket and caused me to almost lose the sharpener but not for the fact that I felt the sharpener fall down the leg of my pants. This is simply just a poor design flaw in my opinion. You never want to leave an abrasive surface exposed in any way, especially if the product is design to be carried in the pocket as a portable sharpening device. I just wish that Smithâs would redesign this sharpener so that when itâs not in use, no part of the sharpening rod is exposed to do damage when carrying the item. For this reason, I do prefer the design of the EZE-LAP model M diamond rod sharpener, or the Lansky tactical diamond sharpening rod (despite the fact that I strongly dislike pull-through carbide sharpeners and the lansky sharpening rod also sports one). So while the Lansky and EZE-LAP donât offer as much sharpening versatility as the Smithâs, they are both more well thought out designs when it comes to carrying them in a pocket. Conclusion:As long as you donât plan on throwing this sharpening in your pants pocket, and you have a safer way to store and carry this sharpener so the exposed portion of the rod doesnât chew through your belongings, then itâs a great sharpener. Itâs extremely versatile, compact, and inexpensive. I think with just a little design tweaking from Smithâs this could be one of the best portable sharpening devices on the market.

Very handy tool, the small, lightweight size and different shapes / profiles make it very versatile!!!
I have found this a versatile tool, and get a lot of use out of it. Granted, the 600 grit does not make this a finishing grit / sharpener for the finest edge on your best knives, but that is not why I bought it.Here are some of the ways I use this sharpener:- The thin / low profile of this sharpener make it a great tool for gardening tools with curved edges. My flat sharpeners struggle with the tight confines and curved edges of pruners, shears and other cutting tools. However, this tool is an excellent choice for those tools – between the flat spot on the round edge and the rounded portion, this makes quick work of my garden cutting tools.- Touching up my fishing hooks and lures – I throw this in my tackle box to give my hooks and lures a new point when needed. The groove in the rounded side makes quick work of hooks and lures.- For hiking / backpacking – this tool is lightweight and low profile, and is a good choice hiking, camping and even backpacking for a lightweight tool when you need something to touch up a knife edge, smooth off the corner of a dinged tent pole, or anything where a metal burr needs to be knocked down.- For touching up a serrated edge – the pointed end of this was made for re-honing serrated edges, and I use it for my Spyderco serrated edge, or even for the first pass on my serrated kitchen knives. The pointed end also works good in tight spots, like low clearance pruners and cutters where it is tough to get other sharpening tools in a tight spot. This sharpener is small enough to stick in a day pack, clip in your pocket while doing chores or on the go. I would recommend this sharpener to anyone looking for something small and compact that needs a sharpener where others might not do the job, or when you want something that packs nicely. Thanks for reading.

Used! – Updated review
Bought this expecting a new product. Instead, I was sent something which is at best open box and at worst used for who knows what. Returning and will update review if the replacement is new.Update:Replacement sharpener arrived in new condition. This sharpener is awesome. I restored two dull bread knives to respectable sharpness in no time.

This little tool fits like a pen in your pocket because the file goes in the tube. The fine diamond grit works like a charm on bread knife scallops on the round file parts. The flat part is good for the flat side of the knife. Using on a Wustoff bread knife, putting an edge on took less than 10 minutes. Sharp.
