Excellent toaster that displays well on the counter
Purchased this as we had decided to do away with our toaster oven that we had for years. We wanted to have a good looking toaster that was red with a bagel function and this hit the mark. As a note, there is no such thing as a perfect toaster unless they start building them to scan the toast and measure darkness of the toast based on a touch screen setting. But that toaster will then cost you $200+ and what do you need that for?Looks: We love this toaster for the red mixed with the stainless steel. It has a bit of a retro look to it yet still does not feel out of place. People say the red is a fire engine red but in my opinion, it is a bit deeper of a red and not as bright as a fire engine red. I placed it next to my Le Creuset which is a darker red on the bottom for comparison so you can have an idea of the red color.Functionality: The toaster does exactly what a toaster should do: toast. I see people complaining that it burns their toast or that it doesn’t toast even but I have yet to find a toaster that does toast perfectly. And that is because it will vary based on the bread that you place in the toaster, the amount of moisture in the bread, the temperature of the bread and if you just used the toaster to toast something else. For my standard loaf bread slice, a 1 works perfectly, giving me a good toasting. I will say, it does toast better with two slices as opposed to one as it will get a little on the darker side with just one slice as opposed to two. It toasts bagels really well and their is a bagel button so you can toast just the inside of the bagel. For a room temperature bagel a two, maybe 3 works well but a cold bagel a 3 to 4 is better. The same for an english muffin as a bagel. A piece of sourdough bread is a 2 maybe a 3. Regardless of your setting, you should always monitor what you are toasting and if it is getting dark, then hit the cancel button to pop it up. As for the extra lift, it works fine except with the smallest pieces of bread like when the english muffin top comes out really small as compared to the bottom. But this is the exception.Overall, this is an excellent toaster that I highly recommend.

It does what it is supposed to
First of all, it is a toaster, so it should toast and this is what it does. The design is nice and it looks and feels sturdy. Since the old one had to go, we replaced it with the same brand and have not been disappointed by KitchenAid.

“It’s just a toaster!” I thought to myself as I prepared pull the trigger on the purchase of this fairly expensive unit.”But it IS a KitchenAid… and it matches the appliances in my kitchen… and I have this gift certificate…” I continued, convincing myself to splurge on this pedestrian bread burning appliance .So I did it. I bought the expensive toaster, having never paid more than $15 for a toaster.I recieved and unboxed it, and it iss beautiful! (I got the red one)Not only is it beautiful, but it makes a really evenly toasted piece of bread.It’s simple to use. It is, after all, a toaster. I read the manual anyway… what a waste of time. It’s a toaster. Select the darkness, push the lever.The slots are wide and deep. The cord stores neatly beneath it, and is a great quality cord (I notice these things for some reason).It beeps when the toast is done! Super cool!But most of all, it makes really, really good toast!

It does indeed toast bread, bagels, and what ever fits in the slots that belong. I wouldn’t do cheese but…it works as advertised. Looks okay in the kitchen, but again it’s just a bread toaster that works for a stupid amount of money but that’s where we are today. Buy it, it works.

My Best Toaster Ever
Having been through a good ten toaster in my lifetime, I have found this KitchenAid to be the most functional and reliable for my use. I like the styling of red and chrome which looks a bit retro yet has modern features and controls.The two sides with two wide toast slots per side are independently adjustable. You can toast bagels on one side and English muffins on the other and the toaster time for each can yield perfect results. Admittedly, you will have to experiment a bit, but I found a bagel setting of 4 and English muffin setting of 3 works best for me. The toaster arrives in a sturdy packaging. At start up, there is a bit of a smoky aroma as the new heater wires and insulator are “burned in”. KithenAid provides a superb one year warranty. They say they will ship the replacement toaster before you return your unit should it fail. Details of design include a beeper that activates when the toast pops up, easy-to-clean crumb trays, a place to secure excess cord under the toaster, and really sleek design. This is a winner from the company that makes bulletproof stand mixers that have resisted foreign competition.

one sided toast and chemical smell
I purchase 2 of these toasters: one in 2014 and another in 2022. Both have had the same problems. First, there is a very strong chemical odor/fumes from the unit when it is first used, which I believed would go away in time. It doesn’t. I even put the unit on the patio, plugged it in, on the darkest setting, with no bread in it and ran thru about 8 cycles. When cool, it still has, what I call “a self-clean oven chemical smell”.Second: both toasters, from the beginning, toast one side of bread faster than the other; to the extent that I have to toast them one way, then turn them over and upside down to get an even toast on both sides. Takes some practice to learn when to turn. Over time, the 2014 unit toasted much less evenly, no matter what I did, which is why I replaced it. The 2022 unit still toasts okay, if you don’t mind ‘flipping the sides”, but the chemical smell is still pretty strong. I don’t make toast all that often, but if I did, I probably wouldn’t put up with the smell.
