Heavy duty pan
I bought this pan for baking sourdough batards. The size is perfect and this pan is very heavy duty. Clean up is a breeze. I am happy with the white color I purchased. My bread baked evenly and the seal was good for steaming the loaf. It was nice to have the silicone baking mat included for lifting the baked loaf. Happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend!

Fantastic bread oven
I have been making sourdough bread for the past year, and trying out lots of different products related to making sourdough bread. I started with the traditional Dutch oven that has an enamel inside. This Krustic bread oven is different in that the inside is like an iron skillet. It is not enameled on the inside. When I first saw it, I thought it looked like a nonstick finish, but it is not, it is simply an iron skillet type surface. It comes with a little information book that tells you how to use it, and contains instructions for making sourdough starter and has a recipe for a loaf of sourdough bread. It also came with a silicone bread strap to put underneath the loaf while cooking to make it easy to put in and out of the hot Dutch oven so that you donât burn yourself. I thought it would be difficult to put the lid on with this strap but I was able to easily tuck under the ends while lowering the lid, so no problems there. I went ahead and used the recipe Iâve been using for a while, which is very similar to the one in the booklet. I baked a loaf of bread in it this morning and it performed beautifully. Some things of note are:It is somewhat top heavy, so after you preheat the Krustic oven and youâre removing it from the oven to put the loaf inside, it will feel top heavy without the bread in it so watch out for that and hold it firmly so it doesnât flip over.It is pretty tall, so you will need to remove the top rack in your oven so that it fits.My bread recipe calls for slightly different baking temperatures and times than the ones in the booklet, but it came out perfectly.Overall, a great cast-iron Dutch oven to use for sourdough baking. Itâs not really useful for anything else because itâs too shallow to be used for a chicken and although there were some instructions for using it on the stove top, I would never do that with something enameled on the outside. The washing instructions state that it cannot be washed in the dishwasher and must be hand washed, but if all you do is bake sourdough bread in it, you really never need to wash it. I will wipe it with a dry towel after it is cooled down to remove the remnants of flour, but I will never need to wash it. Iâve been baking bread in my other Dutch oven for a year and it still looks clean.I highly recommend this product for the sourdough bread baker!

Great cast iron bread baker
This is a 5.5 quart oval enameled cast iron bread baker Dutch oven in black, from Krustic. For years I’ve wanted the fancy big name French brand of enameled cast iron bread oven, but even though I make a fair amount of bread, it is so expensive I couldn’t justify it. Enter the Krustic bread oven, at about half the price. This bread oven comes with a silicone sling to make it easier to get the dough in and out of the pan, and a helpful booklet on sourdough bread. One thing I particularly like about this bread oven is that it is oval rather than round. I feel oval loaves are a lot more versatile than boules. Following my usual recipe and procedure, this bread baker produces loaves that are as good as or better than using a standard cast iron Dutch oven, and it’s a LOT easier to get the bread into and out of the pan without burning yourself since it’s basically an inverted Dutch oven–the bottom is shallow and the top is tall. I love that the handles on this bread oven are very large and easy to hold onto even with bulky oven mitts. I was concerned I might drop the uncooked dough when moving it with the silicone mat, but when I actually did it, it was more stable than I expected. I was able to move the dough into the preheated pan very easily. The mat remains during cooking, in place of using parchment, which is great because parchment is usually too fragile after baking to lift the bread out of a regular Dutch oven. With the mat and this bread oven, I lifted the finished bread out with no issues. I was concerned the black finish would make the bottom of my bread overly dark, but it did not even though I made no changes to time or temperature. In fact, I think the bottom comes out better than it ever did in a regular Dutch oven. All in all, I could not be happier with this.
