Initially, I was a bit skeptical.
For as long as I have used electric can openers, I’ve always had a central complaint: the resultant razor sharp edge of the lid and the distinct possibility of undetected tiny metal shavings. None of the openers I’ve used have ever caused me to feel otherwise, regardless of make or model. When I first encountered a side cut opener, I was intrigued. The concept was unique enough to send me to the pantry for a “tin can” so I could look at the construction in ways I’d never imagined before. I determined the sealing method was consistent enough over a number of cans that a side cut should, indeed, cleanly separate the lid from the body leaving no sharp edges and no shavings. The proverbial light bulb came on when I thought of the way copper pipe is cut with a tubing cutter’s sharp edged wheel.Upon receipt of the new can opener, I had to resist the urge to open every can I could find. But those I did open were consistently clean. The manufacturer’s assurance it would even work on pop-top cans seemed almost too good to be true and in some instances, that is the case. Some can makers stray too far from conventional can sealing to allow the side cut mechanism to achieve a good enough grip to work. The pop-top does get in the way on some cans but they are still pop-tops.I am convinced and my wife is thrilled. She was close to resorting to the old hand twist version just to avoid the metal shavings concern. But the side cut opener works. It takes a couple of cans to get accustomed to can placement but once there, it’s almost magic. Give it a try. You’ll be amazed.

Cuts most cans
This can opener cuts both aluminum and bimetal cans. It doesnât open rectangular cans like Spam or sardines. Some cans have deeper rims. It doesnât open them.

OK for small to regular cans, but..
Opener groaned to a stop after 1 inch on two 20 ounce cans of beans. I tried to support can weight, shifted can to start new cut…nothing helped. I was firced to use manual opener, wrestling it turn the handle. However in the shirt period of days after delivery, it opened standard cans. I irdered another brand about a year ago that began failing to remove the lid after about 3 months…required at leatc3 trips around to cut lid. Now, the more expensive Cuisanart is unreliable. I wish I could find the old style manual that I had to crank up and down…leaving a ruffled, sharp edge. At least it opened the can and easier tgat manual with turning handle. Or an original Swing-a-way…they worked. Note to brand name corporations…Outsourcing is NOT working for the good of America’s fading reputation. China is ruining your reputations for producing quality small appliances…electric or manual…single cup coffee makers included. ( poor experience there, too) Right now I am in a quandry for ANY can opener that is reliable. Is anything produced in America anymore…and if so, who, what, where and is it reliable?
