The BEST electric kettle – fast, efficient, with auto shut-off
This was a “going off to college” purchase I made for my 17 y.o. son. I looked at dozens of electric kettles, read lots of reviews, checked out Consumer Reports, etc., and ultimately decided this had the best combination of features at a good price. It has worked out really well, too, I am happy to report. It has actually worked SO well that there are now 5 other guys on my son’s floor in the dorm who have acquired the exact same model! Here’s what is good about this kettle: it heats up super fast. It will boil a full carafe of water in about 2-1/2 minutes – a full, rolling boil. This is faster than my 1300 watt microwave oven! From that point, he can make tea, cocoa, french press coffee, instant noodles, ramen, etc. really easily. He even uses the kettle to start water for cooking pasta, etc. on the stove in the dorm kitchen, since it takes forever to boil water on the burners. The kettle has an automatic shut off. There is no way for it to boil dry[ there’s no chance he could leave it on and cause a problem. (YAY!) The glass carafe means you can see exactly what’s happening without opening the top, which substantially lessens the likelihood of steam-related burns. It also increases the likelihood that the kettle will be CLEANED frequently enough to keep hard water rime from building up, since the glass shows any build up right away. The ONLY thing I wish were different on this kettle is the cord. It is quite short, so the base must be placed very near an outlet. The carafe lifts off the base completely to pour, fill, etc., so that part is not a big issue, but given the placement of outlets in dorm rooms built in the 1940s, a 2′ cord is a challenge! It’s not an insurmountable problem; it’s just something that could be better.Overall, this is a great small appliance that makes dorm life much nicer, and has made the microwave entirely unnecessary for my son and his roommate. They actually sent the roommate’s microwave back home – This does what they need, and they decided they’d rather have the shelf space.

So far so good….
After reading every single review and practically poking my eyes out….I decided on this one, in part because it has a glass pouring spout, glass interior and hidden heating element. No plastic touches the boiling water…only the condensation on the plastic lid. It’s slim pickens out there these days. My 16-yr-old Russell Hobbs kettle suddenly bit the dust. It was a real RH (before the company was sold off) and it had the heating element inside the stainless steel kettle. Over 16 yrs, we went from a family of 6, hardcore tea drinkers….down to just the two of us. To go from that old RH to this glass one was a leap of faith. I initially am not disappointed. I boiled an initial pot of water & dumped it. Then I washed the interior out with soap & water before boiling two more kettles to spill out. It was easy to get my hand inside to clean it. It took 7 minutes to bring ice cold tap water to a rolling boil at the maximum fill line. I enjoyed a pot of tea without any strange smells or tastes. It poured nicely into my teapot without any spills from the spout. It looks nice on my counter top and takes up less space than my old kettle. It’s not too heavy nor is it cumbersome in any way. I can’t live without the speed and convenience of an electric kettle and this one makes me super happy. I’m like “so modern” now! The only downside was that Amazon did not have this kettle in stock so I made the purchase from a vendor and had to pay a shipping charge (I’m a Prime gal). The vendor did pack well and I received it within 2 days anyway, so other than having to pay for shipping, it was still a seamless purchase. I will certainly update my review if I encounter any trouble with it because I am a militant tea addict. You’re welcome.

Not like the old one!
I have not decided whether to keep it. I had a slightly larger version for 10+ years that worked faultlessly the whole time until the lid cracked and the auto turn off stopped working. Since it had been so great I bought this which is the same manufacturer but a little different design. OR a LOT different. I carefully followed the instructions to clean it with the first boiling. I did fill it to its MAX line because it was always fine on the other one. IT BOILED OVER AND DID NOT STOP ITSELF. WATER EVERYWHERE AND I HAD TO PULL THE PLUG. so disappointed. Their support team has been responsive and helpful and I can return or replace. I think I will return and try another brand.

All glass container
It heats the water in a glass container. The hot water doesn’t touch any plastic while heating, unlike most electric kettle. I wish the lid wasn’t plastic (the screen is metal) so I lift the lid when I empty the kettle.

“They don’t build them like they used to” some people say
I waited to have had this kettle for a while before I gave my review. I had been a Capresso lover untill I replaced the one I had for about 10 years for one that lasted about two months. “They don’t build them like they used to” some people say. I loved the design of Chef’s Choice but I had never heard of this brand before. I was a little skeptical because as they say in my country “not everything that shines is gold”. So I purchased this little and beautiful kettle just becasue it was the one that looked similar to my Capresso and it would look pretty in my kitchen. I am a strong believer that it is important for the item to perform well but it is also important to looks pretty. The kettle is the item I use the most in the kitchen as I am a tea lover and drink tea all day long, so I never put it away it is always sitting on my kitchen counter looking pretty and working like a slave.Yes like a slave I just feed it water very often and clean it regularly. I have had it for close to a year now and I can certainly say that it works great. The water does not have an after taste and it is just the right temperature and like I knew it would It looks pretty in my kitchen. I would totally recommend this item.
