They are NOT the simple plastic feeling plates but rather these have a touch of “weight” on them to give them a feel of a sturdier plate without actually having the burden of having potential chipped porcelain/heavy plates. Melamine is the way to go. I’ve had melamine before and they are not as good as this Carlisle brand. I’ve ordered the bowls too and the small plates. I’m really impressed with this company. I had to contact them regarding another issue and not only are they quick to respond to a question or concern, they stand fully behind their product. Now WHERE do you find THAT anymore these days. These are beautiful! Most melamine plates are super ugly/ cheesy looking, but these are the super exception and are well worth the price! They are just the right weight, and height and will ook fabulous for al fresco dining.

I ordered these plates because they looked like a similar, smaller plate that I use every day. These are dinner plate size. They have a plastic coating on the top of the plate, and it is peeling off around the rim. Every time that I use them, a little finish flakes off. I would not recommend these.
