Don’t give up if it suddenly stops working!
This is an update on my Breville kettle, 3 years in. A few days ago the kettle suddenly stopped boiling water.Some other reviewers mentioned this too and ended up ditching the kettle. I tried to fix it.The base lit up as usual, and I tested it using another recent purchase a small 3 cup kettle with the same type of base–the base was working and it heated my back-up kettle. After reading the Breville instruction manual again, I spotted something I had never done–descale the kettle. I would look into it every now and then, it did have a slight grayish discoloration, which I thought was because of the heating element. That was actually lime scale, and it will eventually stop the kettle from working. I first used vinegar and a soft brush to try to get it off without much success but I could see the areas where I had brushed had cleared a bit. The instructions say to clean periodically with a descaling product or a vinegar and water mix, and boil. Since the kettle wasn’t functioning, boiling wasn’t going to happen, so I tried putting in 2/3 cup vinegar and then filling with BOILED water to the MINIMUM fill line. I let that stand overnight. The next morning I was surprised to see the kettle back to it’s new gleam on the inside, and happily, it is now back to boiling. I still love this kettle, and am keeping the 5 stars. The feature I love the most is the auto shut off and it boils quickly. As with everything, it pays to read and follow all the advice in the directions!Original Review:I’m giving this kettle 5 stars because I t’s the best kettle I’ve ever had! I’ve been using it for several months now and it performs beautifully. I haven’t had any problems whatsoever. What another reviewer described as “rust” around the bottom of the inside is, I believe, some slight discoloration on the stainless steel as this is where the heating coil is located. I saw this too after the first time I used it, but it’s virtually disappeared. It certainly isn’t rust and doesn’t affect the use. I am also in the habit of not leaving water sitting in the pot, just dump it out when we’re done and leave the lid open to let it air dry. It does beep when the water boils and every time the pot is lifted off the warming plate. I don’t find this particularly loud or annoying. I especially like that one can choose the perfect temperature for whatever beverage is being made.

The best Electric kettle I’ve ever owned!
Got this for my wife to replace a basic one she had that finally broke.This unit looks great right out of the box. Base looks solid as well. Nothing about it screams cheap and doesn’t look like plastic.She loves how it has multiple settings depending on what type of tea she’s drinking. Heats up the water quickly. We use it multiple times a day and have had it for awhile now and haven’t had one issue. Still works/looks great! Def worth the purchase and then some. 👍

Easy to see settings and a little smaller
I bought this kettle for my elderly father-in-law, who loves his tea, but is usually only making a cup or two for himself. This one is smaller than most at only 7 cups maximum capacity. The controls are on the base, which is easier for him to see than those with controls on the handle. You just select the temperature and the temperature indicator lights up with a white light, which is better for him than the colored indicators on many kettles because he is color blind. Each time he uses the kettle, it returns to the temperature setting he chose before, which is perfect. He can just press the start button and walk away. If he forgets he has put the kettle on, it will keep his water at temperature for 20 minutes, then it automatically turns off. No more burning kettles on the stove. If he wants to make soup or manual drip or french press coffee, there are higher settings for these as well. I don’t agree with the manufacturer’s temperature settings suggestions for types of tea however. I select their coolest temp for green and white teas and American herbals, so they maintain their beautiful mellow flavors and don’t get bitter. Herbal teas have lots of different ingredients, so you will have to experiment with different temperatures for best flavors. Even the black teas certainly do not want the 212 degree temp that the manufacturer suggests. Choose 180 degrees instead for the English style black teas. For Oolongs and other asain black teas, go a little higher-at least 190, but never boiling. Their french press suggestion is at 200 degrees also, which is a bit high. Luckily there is a 195 selection marked for Oolong, which is perfect for french pressed coffee. These settings are my preferences for full expression of the delicate flavors. Some may really prefer a bitter flavor with their teas and may have other temperature preferences.
