Alessi Parmesan Cheese Cellar, Silver Giant

Well made and sturdy, doesn’t include spoon.
Just like the ones you see in Italy. Part of the attached top flips back into handle to keep it propped open while serving. Very sturdy and good looking product. I already had a small spoon to use with it so the fact that it isn’t included doesn’t bother me because I was able to match my flatware.

It’s beautiful. I love this cheese dish. I purchased it as I usually have a lot of family at one time and the little glass I use for the cheese wasn’t enough for the table. This is polished nicely and the glass is easy to take out and clean

Great parmesean cheese cellar but, why isn’t there a spoon included? Especially for the price, it really seems like there should be a matching spoon included.

Ettore Sottsass, who designed the 5071 Cheese Cellar for parmesan, was born in Austria in 1917 and has designed across the board from buildings to everyday products. In fact, I only just discovered that he designed the Olivetti Dora typewriter I bought after a few months of working as a Saturday girl in a sweet shop in the 1970s, one of the first objects I ever fell in love with and of course have to this day.Most people would not be able to commission a great building or one-off piece of product design by someone of Sottsass’ stature. He founded the Memphis design collective of the 1980s and, if you remember the eighties, much of the design vernacular of that period was filtered through the lens of Memphis. With mass production, great design is just as desirable – but it’s made affordable. It can sit, like this 5071 Cheese Cellar, on your dining table and make you feel good, giving you a little electric buzz of pleasure to know that you have it in your life.It is beautifully engineered. The flip top lid operates smoothly and the actual cellar – the glass part – is cradled within stainless steel struts. There is no accompanying spoon. If you’re very keen to get one that matches I’d recommend the Alessi Mami teaspoon – highly polished just like the 5071. But any spoon will do and juxtaposing some battered old heirloom teaspoon would be just as effective.This is a classic design. It won’t date, so it’s great value because you’ll never find a Cheese Cellar that looks as good as this or works as well. Concerned about breaking the glass dish? – Don’t be. Alessi supply this as a separate part. It will look great too with the 5070 Condiment Set. Great design is sustainable – you only need to buy once. So if anyone tells you paying this kind of price for a parmesan cheese holder is an indulgence, just tell them it works for you and for the planet.
